NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND – Newport Restaurant Group, a collection of award-winning restaurants throughout Rhode Island, is the exclusive restaurant partner of this year’s Volvo Ocean Race. The race’s only North American stopover will take place May 5-17 in Newport.
The Volvo Ocean Race is the world's premier offshore sailing race. The nine-month competition, which kicked off October 4, 2014 in Alicante, Spain, is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavor. A total of nine Legs, the race—for the first time ever—will include a stopover in Newport between Legs 6 and 7, on May 5-17. Newport Restaurant Group will take center stage as honorary host to the race’s remaining teams of sailors. Each Newport dining destination within Newport Restaurant Group, including The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar, 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar & Grille, The Lawn at Castle Hill and Smoke House, will have viewing parties and special cocktails and dishes in celebration of the Volvo Ocean Race.
“Newport Restaurant Group is thrilled to have such a prominent role in an event as monumental as the Volvo Ocean Race,” said Newport Restaurant Group President Paul O’Reilly. “As a destination with strong maritime ties, we have always been a strong supporter of the sport and skill of sailing.”
From May 5-17, the Race Village located at Sail Newport Sailing Center in Historic Fort Adams State Park, will offer a series of family entertainment, food from Newport Restaurant Group, inclusive of environmental education, school programs, interactive pavilions and sailing as well as a four-night concert series in conjunction with Live Nation.
On Sunday, May 17, the outdoor Lawn at Castle Hill Inn will be open to the public and serve as the premier viewing point as the teams start out on Leg 7 of their journey to Lisbon, Portugal. Overlooking Narragansett Bay, The Lawn at Castle Hill Inn has a long history of spectatorship, having hosted onlookers of the America’s Cup from 1930 to 1983, alongside other famed races, including the Newport Bermuda Race and the America’s Cup trials held during the summer of 2012.
Smoke House will be the official Magenta Lounge for the SCA Women's Sailing Team for three weeks beginning May 4 through May 17. Smoke House will be open to the public for those who want to partake in the festivities.
